1. What is this: what are we auditing when we audit the 'hardware'?
A receipt, twelve years long
Set aside what schools 'should' teach and look only at where the resources actually went.
Twelve years of basic education yields a child a hefty receipt:

The point of this receipt is not how much was spent, but where it went.
Chunk installation
> Tip: The original author defines chunk installation as the loop of 'do it yourself → get it wrong → get corrected in time → do it again.' Not listening to lectures, not taking notes, not taking exams—it is the act of working a piece of knowledge with your own hands until it moves from 'knowing' to 'being able to use.'
Cognitive science has mature research on this loop. Benjamin Bloom's 1984 'Two Sigma Problem' found that students receiving one-on-one tutoring averaged two standard deviations above traditionally taught students—like moving from a C to an A. VanLehn's 2011 meta-analysis confirmed the effect size of human one-on-one tutoring at roughly 0.8 standard deviations. K. Anders Ericsson's deliberate-practice tradition likewise stresses that immediate feedback is irreplaceable in skill formation.
These studies converge on one conclusion: real learning happens in the short loop of 'error–correction–retry,' not in the long pipeline of 'listen–memorize–test.'
The problem: of 16,000 classroom hours, how much belongs to this short loop? The answer is small. In a class of 50, a teacher can give one-on-one feedback only a handful of times per lesson. Most of the time, students are 'listening' and 'recording' rather than 'doing' and 'fixing.' Chunk installation is structurally squeezed out of the classroom.
The eight-function spectrum of education
The author arranges eight functions of education along a spectrum, ordered by a single criterion: can the function be reliably delivered at scale, under standardized, exam-based conditions?

Key insight: What gets measured gets resourced; what goes unmeasured gets structurally squeezed out.
Exams measure memory and computation, so schools have become good at teaching memory and computation. Exams cannot measure 'how you decompose an unfamiliar problem,' so schools don't teach it—not because they don't want to, but because this configuration inherently cannot.
The existence of the private tutoring market is itself evidence: what it supplies is not 'what schools taught badly,' but 'what schools structurally cannot deliver.' What parents buy is not 'more school,' but 'a different form'—small classes, one-on-one attention, immediate feedback, customized paths. These are precisely the conditions chunk installation requires.
Schools are an 'organ' in a larger arrangement
The original text is direct: schools are not failing; they are doing what they were structurally chosen to do.
Schools are an organ within an arrangement among 'state · capital · families · the next generation' that has run for roughly 150 years. School is not education itself, only one form of it—a form extremely compressed for scale and standardization.
Eugen Weber's *Peasants into Frenchmen* documented this process: nineteenth-century European nation-states used schools as a tool for 'protocol synchronization,' turning scattered peasants into uniform nationals. Schools were never designed to 'maximize each person's potential'; they were designed to 'fit large numbers of people into a common template.'
Bowles & Gintis's *Schooling in Capitalist America* (1976) and Bourdieu's cultural capital theory point further to a hidden function: class reproduction. Using seemingly fair 'uniform standards,' schools allocate children of different classes to different social positions. Exams are not neutral measuring instruments; they are allocation instruments.
Michael Spence's 1973 signaling theory and Kenneth Arrow's 1973 filtering theory make the logic explicit: the core value of a diploma is not 'what you learned,' but 'you sent employers a recognizable signal.' Once the signal is clear enough, employers need not know your actual ability—only that you 'passed the filter.'
Goodhart's Law: when a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure
Charles Goodhart (1975) and Donald Campbell (1976) each articulated what is now jointly called the Goodhart–Campbell Law: when a metric is used as a target, it stops being a good metric.
Education is a perfect laboratory for this law.
- Test scores were meant to indicate 'learning outcomes.' Once scores became the target, learning became 'how to score high.'
- Admission rates were meant to indicate 'educational quality.' Once admission rates became the target, schools became 'sorting factories.'
- Diplomas were meant to signal 'ability.' Once diplomas became the target, education became a 'credential arms race.'
