A 70-Year Wait in Alcohol
In 1955, a commercial whaling vessel in the Antarctic hauled a sperm whale aboard. While processing the stomach contents, crew retrieved a pale, gelatinous, oddly shaped squid that taxonomists filed under *Ancistrocheirus lesueurii*. The specimen eventually passed into Malcolm Clarke's collection and then into London's Natural History Museum, where it sat in alcohol for seven decades.
In 2025, Sam Arnold and Fernando Á. Fernández-Álvarez of Barcelona's CSIC Institute of Marine Sciences launched a taxonomic revision of the family Ancistrocheiridae, examining 46 specimens one by one using morphology and DNA. The 47th specimen, the 1955 whale-stomach squid, brought the project to a halt.
Morphology That Did Not Fit
Compared to *Ancistrocheirus*, the specimen diverged in three striking ways:
- Pale, gelatinous body with almost no chromatophores, the pigment-bearing organs deep-sea squids normally use for camouflage.
- Trident-shaped arm hooks: a large central hook flanked by two smaller claws, resembling Poseidon's weapon.
- No photophores at all, despite most deep-sea squids carrying bioluminescent organs for counter-illumination, courtship, or predator deception.
- Abundance is unknown. It may be common in some region or a rare singleton.
- Life history is unknown. Reproduction, diet, predators, depth range, and swimming behavior remain undocumented.
- Relatives are unknown. The six cryptic species inside Ancistrocheiridae suggest deep-sea squid diversity is severely underestimated; Mobydickidae may yet have undiscovered kin.

The team wrote: *"The morphology of this specimen was so radically different from any previously described squid that the creation of a new family was inevitable."*
One Specimen, One Family
Establishing a new species is routine; a new genus is uncommon; a new family is rare. A new family means the organism represents an independent evolutionary branch with its own deep history, not a variant of a known lineage. Arnold's team therefore erected Mobydickidae (family), *Mobydickia* (genus), and *M. poseidonii* (species), an entire higher taxon resting on a single specimen, the ultimate taxonomic solitude.
Why "Mobydickia poseidonii"
The genus name nods to Melville's 1851 novel *Moby-Dick*, because the squid is depigmented and almost chromatophore-free, like the famous white sperm whale. The species epithet *poseidonii* honors the Greek sea god Poseidon, whose trident mirrors the squid's three-pronged arm hooks. The full name thus layers two mythologies and two seas (Atlantic literary myth plus Mediterranean classical myth) onto a single deep-sea animal.
Sperm Whales as Deep-Sea Collectors
NOAA records show sperm whales (*Physeter macrocephalus*) routinely dive to about 600 m for up to 45 minutes, with records exceeding 2,000 m, feeding on deep-sea squids (Architeuthis, Mesonychoteuthis, Histioteuthidae, Mastigoteuthidae) that human nets rarely capture intact. Whales effectively act as self-guided, self-fixing, depth-sampling biological collectors: their stomachs preserve chitinous squid beaks, allowing researchers to reconstruct deep-sea food webs. The Poseidon squid is unusual because it survived as an almost complete specimen; the whale was killed before gastric acid could reduce it to fragments. Each link in this chain had to align for the specimen to be rediscovered 70 years later.
Cryptic Species: The Morphology Trap
Beyond the new family, the team's molecular work on the 46 *Ancistrocheirus* specimens revealed at least six cryptic species, organisms that look nearly identical but are genetically distinct enough to be separate species. If morphology misleads at the species level, it may also hide entire higher taxa. Thirty-four additional specimens showed morphological variation but could not be classified further because of degraded or partially digested condition, hinting that more hidden lineages await better material.
Re-Seeing Old Tools
The Poseidon squid story illustrates a broader principle: breakthroughs often come from re-examining existing tools rather than building new ones. The specimen had been physically accessible for 70 years; what changed was the eye applied to it. Just as some AI benchmarks hide failure modes until they are decomposed into counterfactual pairs and capability slices, museum labels can fossilize assumptions. *A specimen tagged 70 years ago becomes its own tag; nobody looks past the label.*
Outsourcing Collection
Traditional deep-sea trawling damages soft-bodied squids through net abrasion, pressure change, and light exposure. Sperm whales offer an alternative: a built-in echolocation-guided capture system with onboard chemical fixation. This mirrors the principle of "outsourcing reasoning" seen in modern AI tool use: instead of training a model to solve every weakness, delegate hard sub-tasks (formal reasoning, soft-tissue preservation) to a specialized agent and keep the strong skill (language understanding, species identification) at the core.
Open Questions
With one specimen representing an entire family:
